Trekking with Timberland: A Sobering experience

Trekking with Timberland: A Sobering experience

In early August I went on an organized 5 day trek to the fascinating ruins of the Lost City (Ciudad Predida) in Colombia with my 21 year old daughter. Having been well informed in advance of the formidable challenges one is likely to encounter the spectacular trek, I prepared myself for practically every eventuality: medicine, suitable clothing, supplies, flashlight and batteries, and jack knife, insect repellent, suntan lotion, walking poles and what no... factoring in that I would have to carry these all in my backpack during the entire five days. High on the list were obviously good hiking shoes that could withstand the demanding walking challenge. Naturally weight consideration did not allow for taking along two pairs of hiking shoes so I settled for one that was supposed to be a pair of state of the art Timberland hiking shoes, almost brand new and in mint condition, ones that I had previously worn only 3-4 times on day hikes.

The trek proved as exciting as expected. So did the Lost City. But what had ruined my day were the Timberland hiking shoes. These (yes, both shoes) literally disintegrated on the third day, leaving me helplessly trying to hold the soles together with the shoes using every imaginable technique possible under the circumstances, ranging from sewing them again (a great local tribesman did that tedious work for me, for a fee) to tying them together using strings of every kind one could find around. These myriad techniques helped for an extra day, much as the walking has become a miserable experience. Finally the shoes simply gave in. I was no longer able to walk in this rugged terrain, and in the absence of any alternative had to rent a mule to carry me back for a few hours until we hit civilization again. Weight considerations were critical (given the mule's carrying capacity: as I do weigh 225 pounds) so I had to leave behind every unnecessary item. That is including those miserable and unsalvageable Timberland shoes. So I photographed them for one last time and bid them farewell.

Naturally I had called Timberland to complain. I offered to send them the attached pictures to prove my case. They would have none of it. Either I send them the shoes or they would not bother. I explained the special circumstances which only earned me the following response: "in my 11 years as a customer support representative" said the Timberland agent I had talked to, " we have never accepted photographs instead of shoes from a customer and there is no way for us to process your claim without the original shoes". She promised to have a supervisor call me back within 24 hours, but naturally that did not happen.

As a final note let me just say that none of the various types of other hiking shoes worn by some 300 other hikers I encountered on that trip similarly gave in. May this serve us all as a lesson which shoes to trust next time we go on a hike and what we can expect from Timberland by way of support if one made the mistake and did wear Timberland on a hike.

I have been a customer of Timberland for over fifteen years. I recently purchased three pair of Men's core cargo shorts. The material is very substandard, much thinner than the previous Timberland cargo shorts I own. The previous cargo shorts were made in India, the most recent purchase I made, was made in Bangladesh. The previous cargo shorts material made in India was very thick. I am very disappointed in the most recent merchandise.

Sincerely,
Marcus Dixon

i am one of approximatly 65 people at a company that have been wearing Timbland Steeltoe Boots of one style or another. We have all changed to other brands because of the hard Plastic type SOLES that Timberland went to a couple of years ago. One of the reasons everyone went to Timberland was the Comfort of the RUBBER Sole!! we are on Concrete floors on 12 hour shifts and Hard Plastic just don't get it! WHAT A SHAME! i like most of my co-workers would have gladly paid more money for the rubber soles.
