Impossible to clean downdraft chamber

Overall, I like using the Jenn-Air CVEX3270B model stove top. The burners and grease catcher elements are fairly easy to remove and clean, as are the downdraft and vent covers; however, my older model center downdraft continuously builds up a layer of crumbs and greasy residue on all sides of the chamber. While I can insert my vacuum tube to get most dry crumbs, there seems to be absolutely no way to clean the downdraft chamber itself without sticking your entire arm down into the chamber and having to deal with the sticky mess all over your arm. I've searched the web and found no solution.
